“It makes me angry when people defend Disney for not having a variety of races in their films. It’s not about time periods -it’s fantasy, what reason is there to NOT include more than just one race?”
Actually it has everything to do with time period. Not to mention where the stories are from. The Princesses for example all come from European countries and were written so long ago that they would of been white anyways. Plus those stories took place in certain time periods. Like Sleeping Beauty, that took place in the 1400s. That’s why in the 90s is when we get more varied races. :/
this topic has been done to death on my site, but I couldn’t resist… as soon as I saw this image come up I know there would be some interesting reblogs to respond to.
A) POC (people of color) have been a part of Europe for hundreds of years. Find me any legitimate internet source that says otherwise, because I can give you 20 that say they have been.
B) none of the movies are historically/culturally accurate to their time/places so it’s a poor excuse if it is only true (and debatably so, referring above) when it comes to excluding POC
C) the 90’s count for shit (and seriously do because they badly represented race in every movie… except for Lilo and Stitch! But that was post-90’s) if you can get all the way to the 2000s and still make Tangled, a movie set in generic fantasy Disney world, and there is not ONE POC in the whole movie. Not even as a background character- nothing. 100% all white Disney (and if you’re going to debate historical Germany, again, I am here in Germany and can tell you that you will find no one here that says the set of Tangled looked like medeival Germany. There was no Snuggly Duckling inn).
D) Disney has no obligation to uphold an environmentally accurate movie, no one cares or is affected by the bushes being historically inaccurate, but I would say they have a moral obligation not to mess with everyone’s minds and perpetuate subconscious racism by always either 1) misrepresenting POC or 2) cutting them out completely.
etc., etc…. I should link to all the times this has already come up for followers who will see it in their dash, but you can find the rest by searching “Has this been asked before” on my side [not so much to the OP, because you’ve probably heard enough from me at this point]
ah yes why not witches, wizards, dragons, magic all cool. POC suddenly your imagination can’t cope?
because it’s simply unimaginable that poc can have any sort of significant role ever /sarcasm
> Tries to justify lack of poc characters in Disney films with “realistic time periods”.
> Neglects to realize that Disney has made films where animals talk to one another and mythical creatures exist.
Talking fish and mermaids are fine, but people of color? No way!
find me a hundred little kids who notice or care about this and i will applaud you.
there are various Disney movies that portray the different races. It’s mostly about when they were made… when the stories were written. Most of the princess stories were made way back when, why would disney completely change them from their origins?
I don’t care if you wanna argue with what i’m saying, i really don’t.
all i’m saying is i can think of almost every race occuring in a disney movie at least once, so shut up about this and let the children enjoy their fantasy stories.
edit: i’m not racist in any way shape or form either. racism is stupid and it pisses me off how anyone can think they’re better than someone else just because of the color of their skin or where they’re from. so.
